Sometimes I do Dumb Things….

September 5, 2006 by Susan

A couple weeks ago, I was looking at myself in the mirror and wondered out loud why my hair looked so boring.  Shaun, being the ever helpful one, volunteered that the color was too drab.  After I shot a few bolts of lightening at him that would have incinerated a lesser man, I realized that he was right (and you know that I hate to admit that).  I hadn’t messed with my hair in a while and my color was boring.

The next time I was in Target, I just happened to saunter by the hair coloring products.  Just to see what was out there.  Imagine my surprise when I found a box of hair highlighting stuff in one of the bags when I got home.  It must have fallen in the cart on accident.  I set it on the counter, fully intending to return it.  (You do believe me, right?)

This morning, that box called to me.   I tried my best to ignore it.  Only there was a lull in the morning.  This was the first day in quite some time that I had been home all alone in the house.  I was waiting for returned phone calls, returned emails, for the dryer to stop drying….I know I should’ve just started vacuuming, but…well, I started highlighting instead.

As I started mixing the concoction, I vaguely recalled a conversation one of my friends had with her sweetie.  He wanted to color her hair for her, even promising to use the little strips of foil.  Instead of being pleased by the offer, she was horrified.  The only one who she could trust her hair was her stylist.  In theory, I agreed with her.  In reality I knew that going somewhere was too much hassle.  You had to call and make an appointment. You had to wait for the appointment.  Then you had to just sit there while they messed with the hair.  You had to make chit chat about inane things.  No, this was something I could just do myself while I was still in my jammies.

When I was pleased with the placement of my streaks (as they used to be called) I set my timer and got out that vacuum. Then the phone rang. (Dang, and I so wanted to vacuum!)   Before I knew it, the timer had gone off and I was still on the phone.  I knew it was bad when I rinsed out my hair and could see bright yellow streaks.  It was worse than I thought.  I looked like a skunk.

My first impulse was to grab a pair of scissors and hack the offending sections off.  Thankfully, I came to my senses before that happened.  Now my plan is to wait until the girls get home and see if they notice.

Sigh…I may end up seeing a hair stylist after all….

Thank you for your comment on my blog. You mentioned you might be feeling ready for winter since the flower blossoms looked like snowflakes to you. So I thought I’d draw you toward anothe picture I posted, one of water, that looks like a heavy snowfall. You can see it at http://littlerockdailyphoto.blogspot.com/2006/08/two-little-girls_27.html

I sure can’t help you with that but it does remind me of when my younger son & a neighbor decided to bleach his hair. He was about 14 and it ended up orange. A fairly birght orange. I called him Carrot Top. That really thrilled him. But, it did grow out.

Thanks for your visit to my blog today. I may have met your parents, but I am not a fulltime RVer, just an extended time one. I Snowbird most winters.

    Company is here, more later.

Isn’t that just the way things happen. That darned phone rings at the absolute worst times. At suppertime, after you’ve gone to sleep, before you wake up, when you’re coloring your hair.

I hope it looks good after all.

Oh dear. I hope it’s fixable and that Shaun behaves himself (i.e., no comments from the peanut gallery!) ;)

You’ve inspired me. I have a great hair story to tell on my blog… Thanks!

WE WANT PICTURES! See this is why I don’t attempt it tho my hairdresser keeps pressuring me to color my white head…it’s just too much trouble.

Just for the record…Shaun was really good. He said “Oh, you got your hair done. When did you do that?” He was worried that it had been done for a week or so and he just hadn’t noticed…it’s happened. Then he asked if I liked it. Then very hesitantly, he asked where I got it done…and that there were a couple of big bleach spots on the back.

You said pictures?? HA!! You’re lucky I even told you about it….speaking of dumb things…

Very funny post, you make me laugh. “After I shot a few bolts of lightening at him that would have incinerated a lesser man” This is hysterical.

I used to color my hair a beautiful auburn shade; however, I was not good at covering the dark brown roots. When my hair started turning gray, I stopped coloring. The gray did not color easily, and I figured that two-tone hair was bad enough. Three-tone hair was out of the question. Now, I naturally have two-tone hair, white and steel. Oh, well…

At least you didn’t smell like a skunk. A friend of mine gave me a permanent in her home once, and had all the windows open. Just as she finished putting the solution on, a skunk sprayed something, and the smell permeated the house, and my hair. After that, until the perm wore off, I smelled skunk every time I washed my hair. Ugh!

Years ago, my sister Katie and I had a bottle of wine, a home highlight kit and nothing better to do. We went to highlight my hair as hers was already a beautiful blonde. We had lots of laughs and talked a lot of trash, but when it came to inflicting improvements on my hair, I chickened out and washed it all out too soon.

The next morning when I had a slightly thick head, I thankfully didn’t have scary drunkenly highlighted hair.

I feel your pain. Go get it fixed and then you’ll feel better.

It sounds kind of fun (and totally like something I’d do). Once I tried cutting my son’s hair with electric clippers. I’d seen my mom (a hair stylist) do it a million times. It can’t be too difficult can it? My poor son had to be shaved bald and you could still see the horrible hack-job I had done. Ooops! Oh well! Keep smiling – Halloween is only a little over a month away :)

It’s good to know I’m not alone in my dumbness! It seems as though everyone has some sort of great story about this :)
