To Outwit A Cat

January 3, 2008 by Susan

I didn’t grow up with animals.  Having pets is something that my father doesn’t believe in. (As if pet ownership is part of some strange cult-ish religion to scorn) So naturally as soon as I had my own apartment I convinced my landlady and my allergic roommate  that I really, really needed a cat.

My perception of cats was that they were either sleeping on your lap or disdainfully ignoring you.  I was completely unprepared (and simply delighted) to discover that they each have very individual personalities. (Imagine that!)  In homage to my father, we currently have a small herd a few cats that just amuse us to no end.

A couple years ago, one of our cats, Sissy, discovered the joys of chasing around old plastic Easter eggs.  She carries them around in her mouth, bats them with her paws and generally has a wonderful time with them. This year, all of her eggs seem to have disappeared early…too early to run out and buy her another dozen.  So, she has taken matters into her own hands …er…paws.

We keep an small plastic container next to the bathroom sink for the cats to drink out of (What you think they should just drink out of the dog’s dish? You must be nuts!)  Sissy has decided that this dish is just egg-like enough that she must have it.  So we keep finding a puddle of water on the bathroom sink and floor.  The dish can be anywhere…

KT finally got tired of having her side of the sink drenched and decided to do something about it.  Armed with a thick roll of duct tape, KT made sure that the dish could no longer be upended.   Our girl was quite pleased with her handiwork…at least until we asked her how we were supposed to replenish the water dish.

sissy foiled

The ever resourceful KT put her thinking cap back on and using a small plastic cup and yet more duct tape, devised a system to fill the water dish.

I don’t quite have the heart to tell her how much Sissy enjoys this new challenge of prying the cup loose and hauling it off with her.

Sigh…at least we don’t have water all over the place…

There’s no way duct tape is going to stop a cat. Maybe super glue?

Or, you could just give the cup to the cat and put a different dish up there. Crazy idea, I know.

My dang cat plays with her water dish and gets water everywhere. It drives me nuts. Otherwise she just sits around getting bigger.

Sissy just thinks you are making her new and even more enjoyable toys! Woohoo! And they hang!!!

We have a big heavy clay water dish. Those without opposable thumbs just can’t move it.

If you run out of Easter eggs, ping pong balls make great substitutes!

Anything that dangles like that enticing cup is fair game! Couldn’t you just fill the water dish by pouring a glass a water into it without holding the cup hostage? Granted, it’s very clever but I think KT has just created a new cat toy!

We have an automatic cat fountain for our cats on the kitchen counter. However, Sam (Maine Coon) likes to take his morning bath in it and water goes everywhere! What a mess.

Sissy looks very grumpy in the last pic. Like she’s saying “all I have to play with is this stupid cup.”
    Cats— you gotta love ‘em!

It’s all play for those felines…what a tough life!

My cat growing up absolutely went bonzo over the little tab that comes off the top of the milk bottle (around the cap). He’d chase it all over the kitchen floor.

Hmmm….I see no solution to this that a bored cat won’t destroy :) .

HAHA….the cat bowl is great, and amazing how “Artful” it looks, too! Could be a new fad for pet-lovers world wide!

I love the individual personalities of cats…most of the time ;)

Haha…I love it. Cats will get into anything, especially those things you REALLY don’t want them to get to.

Very resourceful of KT with the duct tape, but that just means Sissy gets to show her how resourseful SHE can be. ;-)

Gawd, this kills me. How funny and clever.

Btw, the last six or so times I’ve tried to visit your blog, I’ve gotten an Internet Explorer error message, and my computer has frozen up, which is why I haven’t been here. Now I’m on a different computer!

That’s hilarious. KT is quite inventive and always thinkin’, isn’t she.

LOL! I love the pictures to go along with the story. I’m afraid the cat will always win in this case. They have all day, while everyone is busy or gone, to scheme and come up with plans for these things. :)

Yay! I can read your blog again! For some reason, each time I tried to access it the last few weeks, my browser would crash! I haven’t been ignoring you, I promise!

Very pretty cat! I love the look of satisfaction on her face.

So innovative! Love your kitty! Love it’s nose, I would hve my camera poked in its face all the time trying to get a good macro of the cute little nose.

I think cats are the most intelligent creatures on earth. And they know it, and they live a most self-satisfying life. Our little pomeranians try to torment them, but they keep their coooool and end up tormenting them. It’s so funny to watch. You have a very nice kitty!!

Your cat looks thouroughly disgusted with your daughters project. Cute story as always.
