In The Kitchen With Mimi

July 8, 2008 by Susan

Ever since Mimi was a wee little thing, she has been fascinated by the art of cooking.  She was the only four year old that I knew who would rather have watched a cooking show instead of a cartoon.

I can’t help but wonder if the love of cooking is a genetic thing.  Mimi’s grandfather was a well known and highly sought after chef in New Mexico and of course her father is a wonderful cook as well. (We simply aren’t going to talk about her maternal side now, are we?)  Mimi’s latest obsession has been with cake decorating.  If she had her way, she would watch the cake challenges on the Food Network constantly.

So when I called home from work last week, I wasn’t too surprised when she asked me to bring home some marshmallows and  powdered sugar.  Apparently she had decided to bake a cake and had planned on covering it with rolled fondant.  (The marshmallow version tastes better than the traditional.  Personally, I think they are both nasty even if they do look pretty)

Immediately after I got home and handed over the requested supplies, Mimi got to work.   When I offered my assistance, my budding pastry chef merely shooed me away with a stern warning not to peek at her artwork. (Could she possibly have forgotten who she was talking to???)

An hour or two later, Mimi happily presented her completed work of art.  She explained that she had intended on making some sort of alien.

See the scary alien eyes?

But then somehow it morphed into…something else.

Interestingly…it tasted about the same as it looks.  (How on earth does one mess up a box of cake mix???)

When I came home from work today, I found that Mimi had once again put on her toque and had baked some yummy carbon-flavored chocolate chip cookies.

Obviously, she gets her baking skills from her father’s side as well.  I wonder if I can convince her to wait until the cooler days of fall before I teach her how to bake.  Sigh…

Wait, baked goods aren’t supposed to have that carbon flavor? (Yeah, you might need to teach me, too…)

That cake makes me laugh. Who knows. Maybe that’s what an alien love cake is supposed to look like?

That cake looks .. uh … interesting. I can kinda see the alien she was going for though.

    Mimi likes chocolate, does she?

    I love the green icing.

  4. on July 9, 2008 at 9:14 am Becky

Bwahahahaha! I’m laughing my butt off. I messed up Jello once. Yes, JELLO.

  5. on July 9, 2008 at 9:57 am Melanie

Oh, I could mess up chocolate cake mix. Not a problem for me at all.

(Does it say “love” on her cake?)

Oh my! I give her a big ol’ A for effort and creativity, no doubt. The taste part can always be developed…in the fall, like you said! Maybe you can turn her on to No-bake cookies in the meantime?

Jennifer~It’s amazing how much better they taste without that very distinctive carbon taste!

Jay~yeah…the whole thing would best be enjoyed by aliens!

    Ruth~Yes indeed!

Becky~Maybe I’ll tell you about how I melted a pot when I was trying to cook rice once…

Melanie~It does say love. And it was actually very pretty…hard to tell from the snapshot.

Maura~Not a bad plan! (she usually cooks quite tastily…I can’t imagine what she did)

She gets an “A” for effort and creativity. I’m not a big fan of the fondant myself.

I wish Danger Boy’s chocolate chip cookies were a little less tasty–not good for me at all.

My son used to opt for cooking and fix-it type shows in place of cartoons too. He doesn’t bake, but can sure cook a mean dinner!

Gotta love the “Love” she put into it. :)

I used to love decorating cakes, and I didn’t do nearly as good a job as Mimi.

(And no–I would never think you drink too much from your Derfwad comment–that would be the pot calling the kettle black :-)

LOVE-LOVE the alien… reminds me of a certain visit to Roswell…. and carbon-cookies? Oh lovely! Laughing the Kool-aid outta my nose! I really have to visit here more often!

I think the cake looks good, it didn’t taste so good tho? ;)

I love all those birds in your header!

All this reminds me that I must work on my boys’ cooking skills this summer. Yes, the summer that is already half-gone….that’s the one I’m talkin’ about!
My oldest found some of those fundraiser pre-formed cookie dough cookies in the freezer last month. He even managed to keep them from carbonizing! But he still wants to know how long to boil the water for Ramen noodles…

Thanks for stopping by my blog! :)

I’m surprised you were brave enough to try eating it … scary. :)

Don’t stifle her creativity tho, you never know where it might lead.

Did you take the photo of the sleepy birds in the header? Where were they?

This post was just precious. The energy that the little one put into that cake is apparent, though apparently a little work needs to be done on the whole recipe thing. What a darling blog to read on my first time here. Thanks!

Hey, you’ve got a very cool new header! (I stopped by to get your URL for my blog list.)

  17. on July 13, 2008 at 7:29 pm Cazzie

Haha, wow, what a creation, how marvellous, too bad it did not taste nice though.

Mimi and I would so be friends. ;)
